The ending, in particular, solidifies the film’s position among the most popular erotic thriller movies. Either way, years after its original premiere, the film continues to inspire much discussion. While many praised Roth’s willingness to depict some very disturbing and previously-unexplored themes, others noted what they perceived as instances of homophobia and racism in the plot.
